The company supplied specialized concretes for this emblematic project in the Mexican city of Mazatlán

CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V. (“CEMEX”) reported that it supplied specialized concrete for the construction of the Mazatlán Aquarium, the largest aquarium in Latin America. The project was designed by the world-renowned architecture studio Tatiana Bilbao Estudio and integrates marine and terrestrial nature with architecture and the human world..

The aquarium is expected to contain 4.5 million liters of salt water and more than 19 showrooms for at least 2,500 different marine species. The facility will have 21 water tanks with eight specifically designed to house large fish. During design and construction, the architecture firm consulted with global experts in aquarium development and management to ensure the waterproofing of the tanks and that the structure is suitable for the marine life housed in the facility.

CEMEX supplied more than 20,000 cubic meters of concrete, including integral colored concrete and temperature controlled self-sealing Duramax® concrete, that guarantee the useful life of the aquarium tanks by 20 years in saline conditions. Both types of concrete prevent sulfates and chlorides from damaging closed structures.

“CEMEX works to offer solutions for some of the most challenging construction projects in the world.”.

We are proud to supply these specialized materials to make this vision a reality.. further, this new aquarium will strengthen ecological awareness, urging us all to protect invaluable marine species ", said Ricardo Naya, President of CEMEX Mexico.

“The project was conceived as a ruin that was taken over by nature for decades and then was rediscovered. It is an excellent example of brutalist architecture and the use of concrete highlights the message of coexistence and transformation of buildings and the ecosystem over time ", said Tatiana Bilbao.

To keep the aquarium in good condition, CEMEX also supplied Promptis® concretes, Architectural Appearance®, Stabilized Mortar® and Ingenia Revenimiento Total®. These concretes optimize construction procedures in a better way than conventional materials.. The Aparentia Arquitectónico® concrete allowed the project designer to select the desired color and shades, meet the technical needs and requirements of the project, and be friendly with the fauna and flora that will inhabit the facility.
