Therefore, it has sought to adopt measures that reduce its influence on the damage to the environment., from architect offices that create buildings with sustainability measures, to companies producing materials that use alternative supplies and recycling.

Business initiatives

In 2016, cement production was responsible for around 8% of CO2 emitted. Companies like Holcim and Cemex are aware, so they have implemented strategies to counteract it.

The Mexican cement company, for example, has set itself the goal of reducing its carbon dioxide emissions by 40% for him 2030, through the manufacture of "green" concrete. In this sense, launched their Vertua concrete line, that is manufactured with 30% less polluting.

Its process consists of processing waste to convert it into alternative fuels.

Holcim, materials company, has also joined the trend. Year, the company destines 100 million pesos in innovating to find ways to make products more friendly.

As a result, It is 2021 launched the Ecolabels with which they identify the cements that were made with from 30 until 70% less carbon emissions. The goal is to get to use at least 100 million tons of waste to make energy.

With this, the company plans that in 2030 its first zero-emission cement producer is created and, at the same time, the rest of the cement generated emits 475 kilos of CO2 per tonne. In 1990 the company produced 800 kilos, and actually 555.

Fibers have also sought to be more environmentally friendly. Amefibra has established environmental indicators, in which it is established that companies must report measures or procedures in this regard, in which biodiversity is considered, climate change, energy consumption, gas emissions and resource management, among others.

Impediments

In Mexico there are various obstacles to meeting the objectives, mainly in relation to the use of alternative fuels.

Vicente Saisó, Corporate Director of Sustainability of Cemex, said in an interview in March this year that the regulatory framework for waste.

"Regulations are obstacles, in some countries there is ignorance of how our production process works and how we guarantee that the emissions we have are not altered by using garbage or an alternative fuel. There are times when they put obstacles or limits to ask for a permit ", Saisó said.

And I add: "We continue to bet on renewable energies, despite the difficulties that exist due to a different vision that exists, But I think that this thought is temporary and in the long term we believe that it will be able to move forward because Mexico has enviable resources.. Our energy sovereignty should be based on wind and sun ".

Holcim also sees a cap on energy regulation. They seek to make a greater investment in solar power plants and wind farms, but first they want to have more uncertainty about what will happen in the sector.
